Day 20 - Goodbye California, Hello Nova Scotia

The coffee is timed to be ready brewed when we wake up far earlier than we’ve grown used to, and we just manage to fit the bags in the car for the drive to the airport. Saying goodbye to Laura at the departure drop-off we’re again struck by how much fun we’ve had spending quality time together, something it’s hard to do when living on different continents. It’s really hard to say goodbye, and so we move our bags quickly inside the terminal.

We’ve got a day of flying ahead of us with changes in Denver first, then Chicago before we can arrive in Halifax. We pass the time on the flights writing our blog, reading and playing Plants vs. Zombies on the iPod Touch.

When we land in Canada it’s nearly midnight, but to our bodies it’s four hours earlier in the evening.

One of the hard things with being sad about saying goodbye to everyone in California has been that we know it isn’t the end of our holiday.  As we start the next section we have a whole load of new things to look forward to and be excited about. As we leave the baggage hall I spy Al waiting to meet us. We head over and exchange bear hugs before we move on and find Jan.
Jan’s grabbing them a coffee so that the drive back to theirs is possible and we all pile into the Jeep.

This is the “new” Jeep as the previous “Camo” Jeep that Jan had was sacrificed to the famous tides of Nova Scotia when Jan was flounder fishing a few months ago! It got stuck in the sands as Jan set the boat off the trailer and couldn’t be towed away before the tide came in.

For our first night Al has arranged for us to stay at the Inn where he works. He says this is so that we don’t get overwhelmed staying in their house and to give us some time to ourselves after our flight.  It’s a really nice idea and when we get to the Blomidon Inn in Wolfville we see it’s also a real treat for us. In the corridor the bookshelves contain old and new and there is also a model of the Cutty Sark to make us feel at home. Outside is a gorgeous view of the bay and the walls are adorned with pictures of sailors and their ships in equal measures. Our room turns out to be the master bedroom from when the house was first built by a shipbuilder in the area, and its bathroom contains the oldest plumbed bath in the area!?! We climb the stairs to bed (!) and are soon asleep after a tiring day of travelling.
