Day 18 - Lassen Day 3

We have a nice slow start again this morning having our breakfast before taking down camp.  The inventiveness of last night’s Smores variations continues this morning as Laura is making pancakes. She makes the batter and we all have a few pancakes each from the stove. When Aaron gets up though, he makes the batter thicker and starts to wind it around one of the marshmallow sticks from last night. The thicker mixture when toasted makes more of a biscuit than a pancake and he pulls this off the stick and fills it with jam and peanut butter before wolfing it down. We have a few sausages left over from last night and the ultimate camping breakfast is born when we put one of these on a stick before covering it with the thick biscuit batter. Toasted, Scott then christens it the “Pokey Dog” and we spend the rest of the morning/day/weekend coming up with variations on this theme that you could sell in camping stores or at a festival!

Our walk today is shorter and gains less height than yesterday but still a challenge. The Cinder Cone is literally that; a cone that is made from the cinders of an eruption. The path to it’s base is gentle and forested, but to climb it the path winds around it anti-clockwise and you gain over 700 feet in less than half a mile. The climb is also tough going because the cinders are small and loose which means it's hard to get a grip and maintain a pace when walking.

From the top we get some amazing views of Mount Lassen and the park but as it is totally exposed we decide to descend and hike back to the car for lunch. It’s a late lunch but nice to relax together and enjoy our last hours in the park. Lel can’t resist a swim in the lake, Aaron can’t resist an opportunity to get his fishing rod out and we are loving having the time together with family, so we start the drive home in the late afternoon after a truly wonderful weekend together.

We get home after 9pm and have a final treat planned as we pick up a pizza to eat for dinner.
