Day 11 - Folsom World Cup Party

We get up early today as we want to fit things in on our last morning with Laura and Aaron before we go to Lesley’s for a World Cup Pool Party. After a brew of coffee (timer pre-set last night, but no jug in place and Laura just manages to avert disaster) we set off to the Sacramento Farmer’s Market which is huge and takes place in a car park under the freeway.

Laura and Aaron are browsing for their week’s fruit, veg and meat and we are in the market for anything that might be good on our camping trip to Yosemite this week. The place is huge and there are lots of sellers with fruit, vegetables, meats, plants and dried fruits and nuts. A lot of them are offering samples and so we try some nectarines. Here the seller gets us to compare a white peach with a yellow one. Both are yummy but the sweetness of the yellow is clear. We keep browsing and try some dried apple at another store before buying some to make a “trail mix” with for hiking. This guy also introduces us to “Plu-ots” and gives us two of these to try; they are a fruit that has been created as a cross between plums and apricots, having the sweetness of a plum, but the firmness and crunchiness of apricots. We pick up some of the sweet yellow nectarines and some corn that we plan to grill on the campfire.

Getting back to the house we then help Aaron empty their garage of camping equipment as they have very kindly agreed to lend us the legendary “camping box” for our Yosemite trip. Our car is pretty full by the time we set off with two camping boxes (one with pots, pans and larger items and the other with small bottles of washing up liquid, salt, pepper and matches), two foldable chairs, roll mats and various other useful things. We’ll pick up sleeping bags and a tent from Lesley and will collect some wood for the campfire on our way out of town.

We get into Folsom just before kick off and are immediately offered a choice of t-shirts to wear to watch the World Cup final in. Scott picks Turkey and I dig in our case to find my Egypt shirt showing solidarity for them after they narrowly missed out on a place to rivals Algeria. We all enjoy morning drinking and the match is more satisfying than some of the earlier matches in the competition, but nowhere near as good as some of the recent Germany games or the controversial semi’s.

We then spend the afternoon alternating between playing in the pool and eating some of the lovely food Lel has made. It’s, apparently, her first attempt at “ribs” but she does America proud and they all disappear into our hungry mouths. Much the same happens to her World Cup cake which we eagerly take slices of before remembering to take a photograph of. Much beer is consumed before we say goodbye to Aaron and Laura who we will meet up with next in Lassen National Park for a weekend of camping and hiking after our trip to Yosemite.
